Garbage Disposal Services in Richmond

Through its Department of Public Works, the City of Richmond provides a wide range of services to its citizens, including numerous recycling initiatives and programs for properly disposing of domestic waste that can be saved from being dumped in nearby landfills.

Curb-Side Pick Up

Every qualified residence with city trash collection inside the city borders is given one 95 gallon green recycling cart with a blue cover by the City of Richmond Department of Public Works. Residents are no longer able to request a green 24-gallon bin from CVWMA.

The same place where city garbage collection is collected is also where residential recycling is collected. Your municipal garbage collection is picked up every other week. The water bill includes a minor charge for recycling. If you would like to sign up for this program, get in touch with your local recycling centre.

Keep in mind that there are certain dos and don’ts for Richmond curb-side pick up garbage disposal:

  • Items that can be recycled include food and beverage cartons, cardboard, mixed papers, aluminium and steel cans, plastic bottles, tubs, and containers (empty, rinse, and replace plastic caps to recycle), as well as glass bottles and jars (no metal lids).

  • NOT PERMITTED: Keep the following items out of your recycle bin: Plastic bags, recyclables in plastic bags, and Styrofoam (carryout or packing materials), contaminated food (such as pizza boxes), sheets or balls of aluminium foil, shredded paper, tangles, hoses, and cords, as well as large pieces of wood, plastic, furniture, or metal, are all prohibited.

  • Recycle plastic bags at local grocery/retail stores.

Drop Off Sites

The City maintains four Drop-off Recycling Collection sites that allow residents to recycle right. Instructional decals show what items are accepted and what items are not accepted.

Collection Services

By means of a contract, Garbage Management of Richmond collects recyclables, yard waste, and solid waste on behalf of the city.

Each week on Tuesday, solid waste and yard waste are collected. Depending on which side of Division Road you live on, curbside recycling gets collected every other Tuesday. If a holiday falls on a Monday or Tuesday, collection is postponed by one day for Christmas Day, New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, Labor Day, and Thanksgiving Day. In these circumstances, collection will occur on Wednesday.

Every property in the city that has collection pickup has its collection service fee added to the summer tax roll and collected when the summer taxes are paid.

As opposed to many other municipalities, the city does not employ stickers or other means of identification for collection bags. Shops like hardware and supermarket stores sell bags.

Residents are allowed to use disposable plastic bags with a maximum capacity of 32 litres and a maximum loaded weight of 50 pounds. Residents may also use reusable containers with a maximum capacity of 32 gallons and a maximum loaded weight of 50 pounds made of plastic, metal, or fiberglass.

The resident is in charge of making sure that containers, bags, bundles, and bins are put at the curbside, or as near as possible to the routes taken by collection vehicles, by 7:30 a.m. on the scheduled collection day.

If a resident follows this procedure and is skipped, contact your recycling centre.
